May 6th – World P@33W0r#d Day

In honor of World Password Day, I’m going to share the shocking statistics about risky password practices (or more like lack of practice), and steps to keep you safe.

91% of people know that using the same or variation of the same password is a risk

But yet, 66% do it anyway!

53% of people haven’t changed their passwords in 12 months

Even after hearing about a breach in the news. Always change passwords at least four times a year, a good password vault will remind you when passwords age and prompt you to change them. Stay secure by only exchanging logins through an encrypted password vault. Never share your passwords with anyone – family, friends, IT, NO ONE!

60% of people are afraid of forgetting their password

A good password vault will automatically offer to fill new passwords with randomly generated passwords such as xpErGG09vkBj. You’ll never remember this, but don’t worry, your vault will! Look for a vault that offers PC, Mac, iOS and Android apps so you can access your vault across all of your devices. You can also add credit cards, passports, addresses, vaccine cards into your vault as well as any other private notes you want to secure in an encrypted database.

42% of people believe they’re not worth a hacker’s time

“I’ve got nothing to hide/worth stealing.” I don’t like hearing this, because while one account may be worthless, if they know your username or email, they’ll plug that with your password into other accounts of yours that may be worth their while – like your ISP, bank, or health network. There, they can access information and sell it on the dark web.
